Parents Hub

You’re not alone
Around 1 in 100 people in the UK are autistic, so there’s a whole community walking a similar path. There is always someone to talk to.

You can contact allison.ward@autismsomerset.org for more questions and support around getting a diagnosis.
Working with School
  • Share a one-page profile: what helps, what hinders, favourite interests

  • Ask about the Autism in Schools project – many Somerset primaries and secondaries have trained "Autism Champions"

  • Request reasonable adjustments: quieter lunch space, visual timetables, exam accommodations

Pro tip: Meet with your child's teacher at the start of each term to set communication preferences and share any changes at home.

Looking After Yourself

Caring can be exhausting; NHS research confirms parental stress is common.

Self-care strategies:

  • Build micro-breaks into your day (5-minute breathing exercise, walk round the block)

  • Join our monthly Coffee & Connect group (Taunton / online) – no agenda, just mutual support

  • If you feel burned out, book a signposting call; we'll help you find respite or counselling
